DIY Pinterest Room Decor

i want to shine light on three of the artists and their incredible work that i’ve found with your help through this video. my ignorance was showing when i didn’t do my research to find these artists and instead took them at face value on Pinterest. i apologize for taking any part in normalizing or encouraging plagiarism and am thanking you all for bringing it to my attention- we learn together! here are the brilliant minds i’ve discovered if you’d like to support them:

I am going to start this off by saying that as an artist, I really appreciate Megan’s gesture. Plagiarism is a serious problem in the art community that many sadly turn a blind eye to. With that said, do I think that what you did actually qualifies as plagiarism? Not entirely. You copied someone’s idea yes, however—

    1. You didn’t try to take credit for their ideas
    2. You didn’t try to resell their work (you recreated their work for your own personal use)
    3. You used their ideas but not the pieces themselves (you painted them by hand, you didn’t print their original art)

I think you messed up by not mentioning/acknowledging the original artists but lets be real, half the stuff on Pinterest isn’t posted by the artists who create them (and not all pins source the original artists either) so it’s not always easy to give credit where it’s due. I am really glad though that you were able to track them down! Their work is beautiful and they deserve the recognition ♡

as an artist, I’m conflicted. I don’t mind the idea of recreating another artists work AS LONG AS YOU GIVE CREDIT, DONT PROFIT FROM IT AND DONT TRY TO PASS IT OFF AS YOUR OWN. I don’t care that you copied for your own decor but you also technically profitted from copying their work since you made the video? Idk, it’s weird territory and I don’t blame you for being unaware. Regardless, I’m glad you acknowledged it, cited the artists and chose to purchase their work. It is still your own home tho so you can leave your own ones up since you’ve done your part at this point (but I feel as though we’re in grey territory here and I’m interested to hear other perspectives).

Go Megan. Fucking love you for this.

  23. Layla Ghaleb on November 1, 2020 at 7:48 am

Why is it that we think of DIYing art pieces as plagiarism but not the million of art decor pieces that get recreated and hacked from IKEA..etc. on Youtube? Just feels like double standards to get so heated on Megan because she re-created an art piece that was so expensive. Would it have been fine if it was a regular piece of furniture being DIYed?

  24. Carmen Grauwels on November 1, 2020 at 7:52 am

I think its become "normal" that when we wanne do some diy cause of budget, love for diy ,etc… that when we go to pinterest to see inspo for what we wanne creat that we forget that artistmade that and make a living from that. And specialy these day’s when so many people are on these apps and repost & repost & more repost , that the original gets lost. Sometimes we know it & sometimes we forget it. So when you do figure out the best way to set it straight is go back or re-upload like you did and credit the original artists. Respect girl & indeed mistakes happens, we are humans 🤷🏻‍♀️ not robots

If you ever do this again, you should iron the fabric with spray starch to smooth it out and stiffen it a bit to create a smooth surface. 🙂

So as an artist, as much as the apology is great, I’m hoping you also compensated them for their work in some fashion because "exposure" is not a legitimate way to pay the bills. Artists are regularly asked to make art to "get themselves in front of more people," for free, and you’re correct in that this would be normalizing that people can rip other people off. You’re not just paying for a piece of art: you’re paying for the concept, the execution, the supplies, as well as the reproduction that a lot of artists do by hand.
Honestly, I wish you had made a video discussing what you learned from the first uploaded video vs. adding in the apology at the beginning and continuing to profit off of these artists’ work. Although, if you’ve discussed it somewhere else than YouTube, I’d love a link to that and to hear your opinion.

I know how easy it is to forget there’s actual people behind the stuff you see pinned. Well done on using your platform to uplift these artists!
