We’ve decided to turn our kitchen dining room area into a more cozy and casual breakfast nook. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at DIYing a custom (semi) built in dining bench, so I used some inexpensive IKEA refrigerator cabinets to make one for our new breakfast nook. I love how it turned out & I’m sharing the how to here!

Hi there – what are the exact dimensions of the cabinets? I read that the depth of a bench shouldn’t be deeper than 18 inches. All I can find are 24 inch deep cabinets. Will those work?

We have a similar set up with the two big tables and I don’t think we could go back to having one – use both throughout the day.
Really love your new bench – awesome. 👍🏼

I’ve been thinking of making a banquette for my new house too. It would be an L shape with pillows. I just wonder how often my littles would toss a pillow in their cereal bowl or spaghetti plate? Still, what a neat way to do lots of seating in such a cozy way!

  42. Heather Butler on August 26, 2020 at 1:29 am

Never seen done before watching here! Thank you for sharing. I definitely would like to try!

  43. Amethyst White on August 26, 2020 at 1:29 am

  44. B.Champagne on August 26, 2020 at 1:32 am

Beautiful!! How much weight can those cabinets take on them with people sitting? Have you had any breaking or giving happen?

  45. Glue Guns & Roses on August 26, 2020 at 1:34 am

I have seen this on Pinterest as well it’s good to see it in video form. A helpful hint for anyone who would like to do this project, I see cabinets like this at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore all the time for 10 to $15!!!

  46. Stevie Cav on August 26, 2020 at 1:34 am

They don’t sell these cabinets anymore:/

  47. Rebecca Anne on August 26, 2020 at 1:34 am

Lol the husband in pyjamas & beanie with his nail gun!! Health & Safety fanatics will be losing it!!

  48. Hannah Merrow on August 26, 2020 at 1:34 am

Can this be done without using a base and just using the cabinets??

  49. Kitty on August 26, 2020 at 1:36 am

looks great, this dyi needs real skills. no way can i pull this off myself.

  50. williamg618 on August 26, 2020 at 1:37 am

One of the cabinet doors is twisted. Exactly where she sat in the beginning of the video. Means those cabinets are not strong enough to hold weight. No bueno.
