Kitchen Makeover: Black & Brass

In this dramatic transformation, designer Charlie Coull overhauls a closed-off Victorian kitchen and turns it into an open-concept space ideal for entertaining. See how black-panelled patio doors set the stage for the kitchen’s high-contrast palette, while open shelving in a light oak finish keeps the gathering space from looking too dark. Touches of unlacquered brass and natural stone will patina over time, paying homage to the home’s rich history. Plus, you’ll be inspired to play host once you see the lively dining area’s spacious communal table!

Hate the oak open shelves. Imagine putting wet plates on there

The dining table is so uncomfortable and out of sync. Black wall and bare brick wall are easily out of love soon.

My jaw was on the floor, one of the best transformations ever seen.

This is one of my inspiration when we remodel our kitchen. I really love black cabinets but I have small space so I went to dark walnut. I also do herringbone in floor using lighter tiles. I hope someone see my remodel and leave a comment.

The "before" set up was going to be my "after" set up. lol. But if I were to tear down everything, I would switch the positions of the dining room and the kitchen, so that you could have more space to work with for the kitchen.

  15. Gretchen Kammerzell on August 15, 2020 at 1:47 am

Beautiful, but how much does something like this cost?

  16. Gina Reynolds on August 15, 2020 at 1:47 am

I absolutely love it! The one thing that I would not have chosen is the table and I would have insisted on more seating at the island. Just love the black and brass ❤❤❤

    Stains as memories… hahahhaha

  18. kimberly kline on August 15, 2020 at 1:49 am

Really love this! However… Not sure the next owner will appreciate the "memory stains" in those beautiful countertops!!

    Stunning-dreams

  20. capstar633 on August 15, 2020 at 1:53 am

Sorry… but open shelving just does not work in earthquake-potential southern California.

  21. Pan Hui Yan on August 15, 2020 at 1:53 am

Hello! May i ask how thick are the quartz counter tops? Are these 2cm or 3cm slabs?

  22. goodpocky2 on August 15, 2020 at 1:55 am

Love the details and the floor wow

  23. Tianna Woodson on August 15, 2020 at 1:55 am

    Institutional and cold looking.

  31. Tpolerex on August 15, 2020 at 2:03 am

I feel good about a kitchen I designed for my neighbors three years ago in their 1930’s Spanish style home with almost this exact design aesthetic. When I modeled the design in 3D and showed them the renderings with the black cabinets I wasn’t sure about their reaction but they went in 100%. It looks great, just as this kitchen does.

  32. Nathan Pham on August 15, 2020 at 2:03 am

Amazing work! Often times, black makes a home or space not look warm or welcoming. This definitely feels like a home yet very modern and stylish.

  33. Arsah Tahang on August 15, 2020 at 2:05 am

    Nice ideas

  34. Rita Gorelenko on August 15, 2020 at 2:07 am

Kitchen is beautiful, but all together, with dining room, looks long like a wagon

  35. Tiarra B. on August 15, 2020 at 2:07 am

🌸How beautiful!! Black cabinetry is definitely on my ‘must have’ list when I purchase my home. It’s sleek, classy, and as this video beautifully demonstrates, it doesn’t have to be dark and gloomy at all!!!🌸

  42. RiVeRs on August 15, 2020 at 2:15 am

The dining table and the chairs are a different shade from everything else around it which creates a disconnection from the kitchen area

  43. ARTFamtastic on August 15, 2020 at 2:17 am

Love this kitchen! Does anyone know who makes those french doors? I love the black:)) Very crisp, striking & orderly.

  44. Michelle Mills on August 15, 2020 at 2:17 am

  49. aquagallery on August 15, 2020 at 2:22 am

I LOVE kitchen islands but in this one instance, I feel that the flow of the kitchen would be better if it had been kept as a galley kitchen. That dining room table was stunning!

  50. Ava Maria on August 15, 2020 at 2:25 am

    Just stunning!! 🖤
